Maynard Ferguson concerts were memorable events for the Robinson Band. The jazz band travelled to Culpeper to see him live in 74. Robinson hosted a Maynard concert in 1975 and he performed a concert in Toronto when we travelled up there to compete in 1977. Today was a sad day in the music world as Maynard Ferguson has passed on at the age of 78. He was touring and recording as a late as a few weeks ago. More information is available at maynardferguson.com and some of his latest activities can be seen at monette.net Gabriel has just moved down a chair. RIP

Oh, man - I hadn't heard. Thanks, Bill. I was at that 1975 concert in the Robinson Field House (remember that jumpsuit he wore?) and have fond memories of the man and his music. If there's a Rock and Roll Heaven, they just got a helluva trumpet player.

Bill:
This morning while I was driving into work, I was listening to NPR and I heard the news. Yes, I do remember the time he came to Robinson in 75. I still remember us trying to imitate his high notes.
The world lost an artist. But with his music, he inspired many around the world.
I read your e-mail. Thanks for remembering me.
Will talk to you soon.
Luis

I saw Maynard this year in Harrisburg, PA while attending the US Army War College. He played in a local high school auditorium - bring back any memories? I was struck by his emphasis on getting young people to learn music in the schools. He spoke on this topic before kicking off the concert. He was obviously stumping for the music educators - the local high school jazz band opened for him. He let the young folks in his band take the lead. Every so often Maynard would stand up and play an 8-bar solo, but he was looking very tired. All said, it was still inspiring to see him up there - at age 78! May I live so long and have that energy.

I remember going with the Jazz Band to see him. Was that in 74? I still think his rendering of MacArthur Park is the best recording of that song - ever. RIP. Primo

Primo He Primo, Yeah, that was 74 when we hopped in a school bus and went to Culpepper to hear him. I sat in the front row and was flat out amazed. I had no idea that trumpet could be played like that. MF kept on playing all these years and has a new album that he recorded a few months ago coming out soon. From what I've heard it's going to be great and the band reads like who's who in jazz/pop music. Can't wait to hear it.
